Simple and Effective Three Light Portrait Setup

After learning the ins and outs of your camera, the next thing you generally want to do is to start working on your portrait skills. One of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to get really good lighting without spending more on lighting than you did on your camera. I have been promoting a pretty simple three light portrait setup that is very simple to use and creates excellent results with a minimum of work. This setup is so easy and effective that you will see it used anywhere mass portraits are done such as on cruise ships.

For more information on this, please read the entire article at CameraDojo.com.

Veteran’s Benefit 2011

One of my favorite charity events I do each year is the annual Veteran’s Benefit Banquet at Cal State University Fullerton. Last year they wanted the shots on a basic gray background but this year I decided to try to spruce it up a little. Using the same gray background I wanted to try to get some kind of theme going on the background. Since I was running with my minimal lighting kit, I only had three speedlites to work with and one was the key light and the other was the fill light, this left only one for the background. While I could have used a single color, I really wanted to try something different. I took the backlight and covered half of it with a red gel and the other half with a blue gel and took a test shot.

First Test Shot

This wasn’t too bad but the blue wasn’t showing up as much as I wanted. Back into the gel kit I found a darker blue and tried a second test shot.

Second Test Shot

Ok! Now we are getting somewhere. I wished I had taken the white background so I would get a red, white, and blue effect but since I only had the gray, this would have to work. Time to stick a live subject in.

Live Shot

Due to the height, the colors start to mix and become more of a purple. Ideally I would have liked to have mounted the background light on the top of the backdrop stand which would have made the blue and red stand out more. Actually, if I had enough lights I would have liked to have had blue on one light, red on another, and a bare third light to try to create red, white, and blue stripes.

Although it worked really well for one or two people, the test was was it would look like with a group, it didn’t take long before a small group (we actually shot groups up to 10 people with this same setup).

Group Shoot

Not too shabby for a 1 minute gel setup. This has really inspired me to try to get even more creative with gels so stay tuned and see if I can come up with something really interesting.

SMUGMUG Riverside Meeting

I was quite thrilled to be asked to be an instructor at today’s SMUGMUG Lighting & Posing Event. This was the second opportunity I have had recently to shoot at Shutter Stories Studio. We had a great set of models and photographers that all came together to haver a great time shooting and learning. I set up a really simple lighting setup to show people how to get started with basic lighting tools and still be able to get creative lighting. Here are a few of my favorites even though I didn’t really shoot much as I was making sure the photographers got to take as many as possible.

LA Shoot This – Craig Park

It was my honor to be asked to speak again at the LA Shoot This group. This time I talked about getting your exposure and your white balance nailed in-camera. When it came to the shooting, the models were absolutely wonderful, there was enough of a breeze to keep us from overheating, and the location offered a nice variety of shooting locations. Here is a handful of some of my favorites shots of the day.

Mastering Your DSLR Workshop
Sunday September 20th 10am – 2pm
Tustin, Ca

Are you wanting more out of your new camera but are stuck on the lousy automatic modes that never seem to get you the shot you want? Take control of your camera with the DSLR Workshop and learn how your camera really works. In this four hour workshop you will learn about the different shooting modes and how they are used to get exactly the shots you want to get.

  • What is Program mode and when to use it
  • Use aperture priority to get nice depth of field shots
  • Use shutter priority to capture movement
  • Take full control with manual mode

Once you understand how to use your camera we then dive into getting great exposures by controlling our cameras exposure settings. By controlling the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed we can learn to properly control our exposure and ensure that we can get every shot.

After lunch (included in the price) we will get into using flash to your advantage and showing how to get high quality portraits with just a single flash.

Finally we will look at using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to process our images and make them look as professional as possible.

  • Lightroom workflow
  • Using presets
  • Camera Calibration
  • Using Lightroom’s retouching tools
  • Creating slideshows
  • Exporting images
  • Watermarking

Attendees should bring their camera equipment, accessory flash, lenses, and laptops (optional)

Total cost for this four hour event is $79 and is limited to 10 people.

gavin-seim-square-dance-callerGavin Seim has recently been trying out some sales techniques that he picked up at the recent Wall Portrait Conference so Kerry and David wanted to spend some time with him and see how this has been working. Gavin talks about first getting the client into the “wall portrait mindset” from the initial meeting and then how he delivers the images and uses a projector to show the client how the image would look on their wall.

These can be some great techniques for improving your large portrait sales for your wedding and portrait photography clients.
