LA ShootThis! Group Shoot Event March 25th

I talk a lot about working with other photographers to improve your skills, learn new tricks, and collaborate on projects together so I often attend group shoots whenever I can. This weekend we had a shoot planned with the LA ShootThis! group and as we were getting started, the rain started coming down. The sky was gray and ugly so I took a tip from my friend Chris Diset and set the camera’s white balance to tungsten and gelled the flash with a 1/2 CTO gel. This got the skin tones really nice but turned the dull gray sky into something a little more interesting.

We finally relocated into a dry parking structure for some more shooting and I chose a spot with almost no ambient lighting so that I could have total control over the lighting.

In this shot, I used a single 24″ softbox from BlackbeltLighting.com and had Amanda turned directly facing the light. This harsh angle provided a nice soft light on her face while illuminating the back wall at the same time.

In this next shot, I had pulled the softbox about 15′ away from the wall so that it wouldn’t light up the wall and then used a second flash with the same 1/2 CTO gel as before pointed at the side of his head to create the hair light.

With Kelsey, I didn’t want the lighting to be quite as dramatic so I placed a third light to camera right with an ExpoImaging Rouge Flashbender as a basic fill light. I still had the 24″ softbox and gelled hair light in the same position as the shot of JK above.

Moving the gelled light from the side to directly behind Kelsey’s head. we got a completely different look with a dramatic rim light effect.

Veteran’s Benefit 2011

One of my favorite charity events I do each year is the annual Veteran’s Benefit Banquet at Cal State University Fullerton. Last year they wanted the shots on a basic gray background but this year I decided to try to spruce it up a little. Using the same gray background I wanted to try to get some kind of theme going on the background. Since I was running with my minimal lighting kit, I only had three speedlites to work with and one was the key light and the other was the fill light, this left only one for the background. While I could have used a single color, I really wanted to try something different. I took the backlight and covered half of it with a red gel and the other half with a blue gel and took a test shot.

First Test Shot

This wasn’t too bad but the blue wasn’t showing up as much as I wanted. Back into the gel kit I found a darker blue and tried a second test shot.

Second Test Shot

Ok! Now we are getting somewhere. I wished I had taken the white background so I would get a red, white, and blue effect but since I only had the gray, this would have to work. Time to stick a live subject in.

Live Shot

Due to the height, the colors start to mix and become more of a purple. Ideally I would have liked to have mounted the background light on the top of the backdrop stand which would have made the blue and red stand out more. Actually, if I had enough lights I would have liked to have had blue on one light, red on another, and a bare third light to try to create red, white, and blue stripes.

Although it worked really well for one or two people, the test was was it would look like with a group, it didn’t take long before a small group (we actually shot groups up to 10 people with this same setup).

Group Shoot

Not too shabby for a 1 minute gel setup. This has really inspired me to try to get even more creative with gels so stay tuned and see if I can come up with something really interesting.

SMUGMUG Riverside Meeting

I was quite thrilled to be asked to be an instructor at today’s SMUGMUG Lighting & Posing Event. This was the second opportunity I have had recently to shoot at Shutter Stories Studio. We had a great set of models and photographers that all came together to haver a great time shooting and learning. I set up a really simple lighting setup to show people how to get started with basic lighting tools and still be able to get creative lighting. Here are a few of my favorites even though I didn’t really shoot much as I was making sure the photographers got to take as many as possible.

This past weekend I headed up to Diamond Bar to help out at the LA Shoot This! meetup. I gave a presentation on off-camera lighting and Greg Bumatay talked about composition fundamentals. Afterward we split up and helped aspiring photographers to get some awesome shots of some incredible models.  As one of the instructors I didn’t get as many shots in as the attendees did, but I managed to snap off a few. Here are some of my favorites.

My wife is very involved with human services, volunteers at different places, goes to school full time to work on her degree, and is heavily involved in making people’s lives better. That’s really what human services is all about. From drug abuse, to child welfare, to domestic violence, and everything in-between, the people that do human services work are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. It was my absolute honor to provide a photobooth service at last night’s function for them to help raise money for their ongoing activities. I highly encourage other photographers to find charities and/or groups in their area that they can help out with projects like this, it is so worthwhile and fulfilling on many, many levels. Here are a few of the shots we did last night.
