This year I led a Photowalk through Old Town Tustin with about 25 photographers from kids to adults. The purpose of a Photowalk is to walk around an area and shoot photos basically. I always encourage everyone to try new things, shoot from different angle, approach people on the street, and basically do things they wouldn’t normally do. Here is a video highlight reel from today’s photowalk.

Playing with the Holga in Vegas
Once in a while you get inspired to try something new or even something old that you haven’t done in a while. My friend Vu bui (http://vubui.com) recently posted some pics he took with his old Holga camera. I knew I was going to have a pretty cool photo shoot coming up and Vu’s pictures got me thinking about the days of film and the uncertainty of using a camera like a Holga. Inspired and excited to get outside my normal box, I fired off some shots at one of the coolest locations around. Here are some of my favorites.
Cars and Coffee Car Show
Every saturday morning just a block from the Irvine Spectrum is what could rightfully be called a billion dollar showroom. If you are coherent enough to wake up before the sun comes out, the Cars and Coffee show starts at 6am and runs until 9am. Today promised to be a big outing as the weather was perfect so I headed over to cover the event. To see a slide show from the show, click on the link to continue reading this article.

Santiago Fire Day 14
It’s hard to believe the fires are still burning, there is almost zero news coverage now. Seems crazy how our media works, first they overload you with information and then turn it off before its over. This country doesn’t know that we are still at war or that fires are still burning throughout southern California, its just mind boggling. Many people right here, within just a few miles of the blazes don’t even know it is still burning.
CONTAINMENT: 90% at the time of this report. Full containment is expected 11/4/07.
CONTROL: Not at this time
INJURIES: Twelve minor injuries to fire personnel
ACRES BURNED: Approximately 28,400
STRUCTURES BURNED:
- Eight residential structures were damaged and fifteen destroyed
- Twelve outbuildings were damaged and nine destroyed
FIREFIGHTING/LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSETS:
Santiago Canyon Fire Update
We went and took a drive through some of the area yesterday. It is pretty mind blowing to see how close to homes and businesses the fire came. Brand new homes in Portola Hills, businesses along Bake, then up along Bake into Foothill Ranch and then east into the wilderness area around Cook’s Corner.
CONTAINMENT: 40%
INJURIES: Five minor injuries of personnel
ACRES BURNED: Approximately 27,630
STRUCTURES BURNED
- 12 outbuildings were damaged and 8 destroyed
- 8 residential structures were damaged and 16 destroyed
Here are some more images, although nothing puts this into perspective like seeing it in person. Keep in mind that at one point the actual line of flames was 38 miles long!
Santiago Fire Update
The fires are still raging but fortunately it is now about 12 miles from me but it is now taking out houses up in the canyons. Here is the latest as of this morning with a few pics from around the house.

Santiago Canyon Fire
It’s fire season here in sunny southern California. What’s funny is that people who don’t live here think we have problems with earthquakes but its the yearly fires that do more damage and kill more people every year. This one is getting a little close to home though. These pictures were taking about 1.5 miles from my house. This fire is being called the Santiago Canyon Fire or the Silverado Canyon Fire and is burning through wilderness area in Orange County.
10/23 11:30pm Update
Acres burned: 18,000
Cause of fire: Arson (3 spots)
Houses burned: 12
People injured: 0
Containment: 30%
While this is the only “official” arson fire, and I am sure there is a few fires started by things like downed power lines, with over 16 separate fires going on right now, and new ones appearing dozens of miles or more from the closest fire, the only remaining conclusion is that one or more people are driving around starting these up. Since this particular fire started they fire agencies have stopped releasing the cause of the other fires, again, leading me to believe they are all arson related.
Halloween Preparations
If you don’t know me very well, let me explain that I enjoy going a little nuts around the holidays. While my snobby neighbors have spent more on Christmas decorations than I make in a year, I opt to go a little bonkers for holidays like Halloween. The irony is that we get maybe 10 kids to our door every year so doing the decorations is more for us than for the local kids. This year, well….we are going a little over the top.
A week in Arizona
I am heading out this morning to Carefree Arizona to spend the week working our trixbox booth at Astricon. If you are going to be at the show, please come by and say hi. If you are an old friend and would like to taker me out to dinner, shoot me an email! I never turn down a good meal. It should be a good time out there, its a good show and pretty laid back. Hopefully I will get up early and get some great photos like this one taken at the resort.
