Leaving Las Vegas

Unfortunately for me another WPPI is in the history books and I have to get back on a plane for two more stops this week. I always enjoy seeing all my old friends there and making new friends. Didn’t get to a lot of the platforms but really enjoyed http://www.jasongroupp.com talk about lighting and picked up his new DVD. I also really want to thank everyone for all the birthday wishes since I will be spending my birthday today in airports and on planes.

What a week this is going to be. I have some business out is Houston Texas on Sunday and Monday, then it’s off to WPPI in Las Vegas where I will be doing some one-on-one mentoring in the Nation’s Photo Lab booth on Tuesday. Wednesday is a travel day for some business in Reston Virginia on Thursday and Friday. Finally, its off to Minnesota where I am joining up with Jason Anderson to talk Lightroom at the Northern Lights Convention.

If you are going to be at any of these events, please stop by and say hi.

This past weekend I was a guest of the Inland Empire Photo Club where I was asked to demo my Blackbelt Lighting Products and show people how to use off-camera flash. The crowd was awesome and the models were terrific. Here are some of my favorite images from the event.

The final preparations are under way for Photo Project 24 that we are doing this weekend. If you haven’t heard, Chis Diset and I are embarking on a 24 hour, 1,100 mile photo adventure that will take us through Southern California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. The goal is to stop once an hour and make a great image. We will be documenting and filming the whole adventure in hopes of inspiring people to take on their own unique photo adventures.

The challenge is stopping once an hour, with absolutely no clue what we will find, and seeing what we can make out of whatever we come across. By documenting what we are going through we hope to share the thought process, teamwork, and techniques that go into every shot.

My friend Jeff Sipper tweeted about a bike race at the old El Toro Marine base today. I thought it sounded like something fun to do and pretty outside of what I normally shoot so I decided to join him. This bike racing series was created by Ryan Miller and Jeff Davis, in conjunction with California Bicycle Racing and sponsored by Rock n’ Road Cyclery and  Team VeloSport. Here are some pics from today’s race.

It was my honor to be asked to speak again at the LA Shoot This group. This time I talked about getting your exposure and your white balance nailed in-camera. When it came to the shooting, the models were absolutely wonderful, there was enough of a breeze to keep us from overheating, and the location offered a nice variety of shooting locations. Here is a handful of some of my favorites shots of the day.

What a great evening for an awesome cause. Show – The Supper Club was an awesome burlesque and music show featuring top-notch performers. With lots of different dance numbers, an awesome live band, and good food, it simply a great time. The fact that it was a benefit for CHOC Charities just put the entire evening well over the top. Here are some of my favorite images from tonight.

Cars & Coffee Auto Show – June 19th, 2010

I love going to the Cars & Coffee Show but since it starts at 6:30am on Saturday’s, I usually am not quite awake enough to head over there. This weekend I suggested to members of the OC Photo Club that people go over to take some shots and a few people took me up on it. I had just worked an overnight grad night, so since I was still awake anyway….

If you want to hit up the show, it is free to attend and is just one block away from the Irvine Spectrum. The show is every saturday from 6:30am – 9am. I suggest being there by 6:30 and watching the cars come rolling in.

LA Shoot This! Star Wars Theme at UCLA

Joelle picked a pretty cool location for this month’s LA Shoot This! event and chose an “out of this world” theme complete with a handful of Star Wars characters and some models done up in some futuristic garb. We all had a great time trying to come up with ideas, playing with lighting, gels, and off-camera flash. Here are my favorite pics from the day.

Recently I was asked to be a group leader at Scott Robert Lim’s Mentoring Workshop in Los Angeles so I jumped at the chance to help Scott out with his workshop. The crowd was great, the models were awesome, and Scott gave several real magic bullets that are sure to help the students to really improve their images. With a couple of lighting tips and a couple of posing tips that are absolute go-to’s for getting really solid images, the crowd really got their money’s worth out of this workshop. Even your’s truely here picked up some new tips and tricks that I will be using in upcoming shoots.

Below are some of the images from today’s hands-on portion.

CSUF Veteran Appreciation Night

It was my absolute pleasure to donate my time to shoot free family portraits during this year’s Veteran Appreciation Night at Cal State University Fullerton. As a photographer, I try to give back to the community as best I can and I provided my services at no charge so that the association can sell the images to people as a fund raiser for next year’s event. I can’t be prouder of the men and women in our Armed Services so this is the least I can do to help out such a worthy cause.

This past weekend I headed up to Diamond Bar to help out at the LA Shoot This! meetup. I gave a presentation on off-camera lighting and Greg Bumatay talked about composition fundamentals. Afterward we split up and helped aspiring photographers to get some awesome shots of some incredible models.  As one of the instructors I didn’t get as many shots in as the attendees did, but I managed to snap off a few. Here are some of my favorites.
