Kicking The Diet Coke Habit Update
Its been three months now since I began my quest to kick the diet coke habit and a lot of people have asked me how its been going so I figured I would post an update.
To start off with, I have been doing great, I did manage to kick the beast in the teeth pretty solidly. About 45 days ago I went to the movies with my wife and we ordered one large Coke Zero and twenty minutes later my heart was racing like I had just run a marathon. That was the first diet drink I had since I started and it will most certainly be the last. The real problem is actually finding something to drink with meals. I had decided I wasn’t just going to switch to regular soda as I can’t take all the extra calories since I am not exactly a world-class athlete. So the end result is that I don’t really drink any soda at all. Once in a great while I might have a Sierra Mist, but that is pretty much the extent of it. I hate the taste of tea but most places serve some form of lemonaid (usually Minute Maid which has no juice in it at all) so more often than not, I am just drinking water. This also means my caffeine intake is near zero as well.
The big question everyone asks is how do I feel. It is hard to explain the difference but I feel better than ever. My blood pressure has dropped from dangerous levels even on medication to text-book perfect (still on meds, but totally under control now). I no longer have crazy mood swings, my persistent migraines have vanished, my muscle spasms in my neck are gone. In short, I feel like a totally new person where I was feeling like an old man ready to die.
Was it the aspartame, the caffeine, something else, or a combination…I really can’t tell you but I can tell you that whatever it was, it has been well worth it.
