Mastering Your DSLR Workshop
Sunday September 20th 10am – 2pm
Tustin, Ca

Are you wanting more out of your new camera but are stuck on the lousy automatic modes that never seem to get you the shot you want? Take control of your camera with the DSLR Workshop and learn how your camera really works. In this four hour workshop you will learn about the different shooting modes and how they are used to get exactly the shots you want to get.

  • What is Program mode and when to use it
  • Use aperture priority to get nice depth of field shots
  • Use shutter priority to capture movement
  • Take full control with manual mode

Once you understand how to use your camera we then dive into getting great exposures by controlling our cameras exposure settings. By controlling the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed we can learn to properly control our exposure and ensure that we can get every shot.

After lunch (included in the price) we will get into using flash to your advantage and showing how to get high quality portraits with just a single flash.

Finally we will look at using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to process our images and make them look as professional as possible.

  • Lightroom workflow
  • Using presets
  • Camera Calibration
  • Using Lightroom’s retouching tools
  • Creating slideshows
  • Exporting images
  • Watermarking

Attendees should bring their camera equipment, accessory flash, lenses, and laptops (optional)

Total cost for this four hour event is $79 and is limited to 10 people.

Lola and Ginger – Pet Photography

Dogs-1Ok, Lola and Ginger aren’t people but I don’t have a category for pets yet. Lola is the black one and Ginger is…well…the ginger colored one. They are both Chihuahuas and Lola is five years old and Ginger is six. The baby’s mommy (my wife) has been begging me to shoot them for a while now and since a saturday rolled around that is too hot to go anywhere and there was nothing on the books, it seemed like the perfect time to get some shots of these little angels.

While East Aurora, New York has become somewhat of a second home for me the past few months I haven’t ventured out away from the village much. Tonight I was treated to dinner in Buffalo at Shanghai Red’s on the waterfront. Great view, great food.

Kristi and Aaron Engagement Shoot

Aug16

There is just something about an engagement shoot that is usually very special. The shoots are usually not rushed, the location often has some special meaning, there isn’t a big crowd of people, and it gives me a chance to get to know the couple better. All of these came together for Kristi and Aaron’s engagement shoot which took place in a very small, secluded park where Aaron had got Kristi to go for a walk one evening. As they were taking in the view of the ocean, Aaron dropped to one knee to propose, so it was only appropriate that we did their engagement shoot at the same spot.  Tagging along as my VOLS (voice operated light stand) was my good friend Jeff Sipper from Sipper Photography.

Digium card photo shoot

Digium_Card_SetupToday I needed to shoot some Digium interface cards for 888VoipStore.com. The challenge was that I wanted to get a vertical shot with a reflection underneath. The reflection was simple, just shoot the product over a sheet of thick plexiglass that is sitting on top of a sheet of white muslin. Getting the card to “stand up” required a little bit of thought. At first I tried some acrylic blocks but that stood out too much and would require more Photoshop work than I wanted to do. The same thing happened with white blocks. The final solution turned out to be super simple. I used a boom arm and suspended the cards using fishing line. With the strobes going off the fishing line just disappeared making touch-ups for real fast.

Podcast #62 – Conversation with Gavin Seim – Talking about large portraits

gavin-seim-square-dance-callerGavin Seim has recently been trying out some sales techniques that he picked up at the recent Wall Portrait Conference so Kerry and David wanted to spend some time with him and see how this has been working. Gavin talks about first getting the client into the “wall portrait mindset” from the initial meeting and then how he delivers the images and uses a projector to show the client how the image would look on their wall.

These can be some great techniques for improving your large portrait sales for your wedding and portrait photography clients.
